Petroleum resin (hydrocarbon resin) is a thermoplastic resin produced by pretreatment, polymerization and distillation of C5 and C9 fractions produced by petroleum cracking. It is not a polymer, but an oligomer with molecular weight between 300 and 3000.
Petroleum resin is named for its petroleum derivatives. It has the characteristics of low acid value, good miscibility, water resistance, ethanol resistance and chemical resistance. It is chemically stable to acids and bases, and has the characteristics of adjusting viscosity and good thermal stability. Petroleum resins are not used alone, but as accelerators, regulators, modifiers and other resins.
Petroleum resins can generally be classified into four types: C5 aliphatic (aliphatic), C9 aromatic (aromatic hydrocarbons), DCPD (cycloaliphatic) and pure monomers (such as poly SM, AMS (alpha methyl styrene) with hydrocarbon molecules, so they are also called hydrocarbon resins (HCR).

C9 petroleum resin refers to the resinous substance which consists of nine carbon atoms, such as "olefins or cyclolefins polymerized or copolymerized with aldehydes, aromatics, terpenes, etc."
C9 petroleum resin, also known as aromatic petroleum resin, can be divided into thermal, cold and tar types. The products of cold agglomeration are light in color and good in quality with average molecular weight of 2000-5000. Light yellow to light brown flaky, granular or massive solid, transparent and lustrous, with relative density of 0.97-1.04. The softening point ranges from 80 140 C. The glass transition temperature is 81 C. The refractive index is 1.512. Flash point 260 C. The acid value ranges from 0.1 to 1.0. The iodine value ranges from 30 to 120. Soluble in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexane, dichloroethane, ethyl acetate, toluene, gasoline, etc. It is insoluble in ethanol and water. It has a ring structure, contains some double bonds and has high cohesion. There are no polar or functional groups in the molecular structure and no chemical activity. It has good acid and alkali resistance, chemical resistance and water resistance. The bonding property is poor, brittle and aging resistance is not good, so it is not suitable to use alone. It has good compatibility with phenolic resin, gumarone resin, terpene resin, SBR and SIS, but poor compatibility with non-polar polymers due to its high polarity. Flammable. Non-toxic.
C5 petroleum resin
C5 petroleum resin has gradually replaced natural resin tackifiers (rosin and terpene resins) because of its high peeling bonding strength, fast adhesion, stable bonding performance, moderate melting viscosity, good heat resistance, good compatibility with polymer matrix and low price.
The characteristics of refined C5 petroleum resin in hot melt adhesives are good fluidity, good wettability, good adhesion and outstanding initial adhesion. Excellent anti-aging, light color, transparent, low odor, low volatile matter. In hot melt adhesives, ZC-1288D series can be used as tackifiers alone or mixed with other tackifiers to improve some properties of hot melt adhesives.
